Avondale has one of the widest ranges of housing in the west, and each type fails in its own way. Avondale sits on the western edge of the isthmus where it meets the Whau River, the traditional boundary between central and West Auckland. It has a busy, diverse town centre on Great North Road, the racecourse and its long-running Sunday market, and a big light industrial area along the Rosebank Peninsula. The suburb is changing fast, with apartments and terraces replacing older housing near the station.
