Grey Lynn is one of the suburbs most closely linked with Auckland's combined sewer problem. Its streets were laid out when stormwater and wastewater went into the same pipes, and in heavy rain those pipes overflow. The Central Interceptor, the large wastewater tunnel that runs from this part of the isthmus to the treatment plant at Māngere, is designed to cut how often that happens. Even so, a private drain that is cracked, sagging or root-filled will still back up in a downpour, because it cannot carry the water away fast enough. The long, narrow villa sections mean drains often run the full length of the section, past big trees, before reaching the street. Inside, Grey Lynn's villas and bungalows can hold a mix of original galvanised pipe, mid-century copper and modern plastic, plus header tanks and old cylinders. Terraces and apartments along Great North Road bring flexi hose and leak-from-above calls. Great North Road and the Northwestern Motorway make Grey Lynn quick to reach from much of Auckland.

Grey Lynn is a hilly inner suburb of villas and bungalows west of Ponsonby, running down to Cox's Bay and Western Springs. It has a long history as a working-class and Pasifika community and remains lively and mixed, with a busy stretch of shops along Great North Road, and Grey Lynn Park at its centre. Its streets drop steeply in places, with long, narrow sections and big trees.
