Howick's plumbing is mostly middle-aged. The village around Picton Street has some older buildings, but the typical Howick call comes from a brick-and-tile or weatherboard home built between the 1960s and 1980s, where the original copper is now thin at the bends and the hot water still comes from a low-pressure cylinder with a header tank in the roof. Howick is one of Auckland's oldest European settlements, founded as a fencible village in the 1840s, and it still has a proper village centre on Picton Street below Stockade Hill. Most of the suburb, though, is 1960s to 1980s family housing spread along the coast towards Cockle Bay and Mellons Bay. It is a settled, owner-occupied area where many homes still run their original pipework and drains.
