New Lynn's history is literally made of clay: the Amalgamated Brick and Pipe works that became Crown Lynn used the local ground to make bricks and drainpipes, and some of the earthenware drains under older West Auckland homes may well have been fired here. Those pipes have now been in the ground for seventy years or more. Their joints crack as the clay swells and shrinks, roots find the gaps, and a slow drain in a back yard becomes an overflowing gully trap overnight. Many of the post-war state houses on the streets off Great North Road and Titirangi Road have been subdivided, so a new townhouse can be connected to the same tired line as the original house. The centre of New Lynn is a different picture. The apartments and terraces built around the station and LynnMall run PEX pipe and mains-pressure hot water, and their emergencies are burst flexi hoses, leaking valve packs and water finding its way into the unit downstairs. Great North Road and the rail line put New Lynn within easy reach of the rest of the west.

New Lynn grew up around clay. The brickworks and potteries that produced Crown Lynn tableware were based here, and the suburb has since become one of West Auckland's main transport and shopping hubs, with LynnMall and a trench railway station at its centre. Around the core, quiet streets of state houses and mid-century homes run towards Kelston, Green Bay and the Whau River.
