Northcote is really two suburbs in plumbing terms. Northcote Point, right under the Harbour Bridge, is villas and bungalows with galvanised pipes, earthenware drains and in many cases a header tank feeding a low-pressure cylinder in the ceiling. When those fail, water ends up in old ceilings and walls quickly. Inland, around the town centre, the big post-war state housing area is being redeveloped, and there are now streets where a brand-new terrace sits next to a 1950s weatherboard house. New buildings bring new connections, but the public and private drains they tie into can be much older, and a blockage or a broken joint may sit somewhere between the two. The new terraces and apartments have their own risks: flexi hoses, mains-pressure valve packs and leaks between floors. Gullies of bush such as Smiths Bush and the reserves around the suburb mean large trees and roots are never far from a drain. Onewa Road gives direct access from the Northern Motorway, though at peak it is one of the Shore's slowest roads.

Northcote sits at the northern end of the Harbour Bridge, with the historic streets of Northcote Point on the harbour and a large post-war state housing area around the town centre. It is going through one of the North Shore's biggest renewals, with older houses being replaced by terraces and apartments. Onewa Road is its main link to the motorway and the city.
