Onehunga sits where volcanic ground meets the Manukau Harbour, and both show up in its plumbing. Inland, lava flows and scoria sit under the older streets, making excavation harder. Closer to the foreshore, softer harbour-edge ground lets old drain pipes settle and sag, and a sagging line holds water and debris until it blocks. The housing adds another layer. Around the Mall there are villas and workers' cottages from Onehunga's port days, with galvanised pipe, earthenware drains and header tanks. Onehunga is a historic port town on the Manukau Harbour, now a busy suburb at the southern end of the isthmus. Onehunga Mall has kept its character, and the area around it is changing with new apartments near the train station and the waterfront. SH20 runs along the foreshore to the Māngere Bridge, linking Onehunga with South Auckland and the airport.
