Pakuranga grew quickly from the 1960s, when the Panmure Bridge made the farmland across the Tāmaki River practical for commuting families. Pakuranga Plaza opened as one of Auckland's early shopping centres, and the streets around it are still mainly single-storey family homes on large sections, with the Eastern Busway now running along Pakuranga Road and Ti Rakau Drive. Many of those homes are now being updated one room at a time.
