Remuera's big sections and old trees are its defining feature, and they explain a lot of the plumbing work here. Oaks, plane trees and other large specimens have had a century to grow roots, and old earthenware drains running the length of a big section give them plenty of joints to get into. A slow drain or a gully trap that keeps overflowing is usually the first sign, and a camera inspection shows where the damage is before any digging. Houses range from 1900s villas and 1930s homes to recent rebuilds, and many have been heavily renovated. Remuera is one of Auckland's most established suburbs, spread along Remuera Road east of Newmarket, with large homes, leafy streets and the volcanic cone of Ōhinerau/Mt Hobson in the middle. It runs from the harbour side at Hobson Bay to the Waiatarua wetland in the south, and has several shopping villages, private schools and parks. Many homes sit on large, established sections with mature trees.
