Much of the plumbing trouble in St Heliers comes from the gap between the house you see and the pipes you do not. Plenty of homes have had new kitchens and bathrooms, but the drains out to the street are often still the original earthenware, and some walls still hide a length of galvanised pipe that the renovation stopped short of. Where old and new meet, joints can leak and drains can crack. The suburb is also full of large trees, pōhutukawa along the waterfront and mature gardens on the hills, and roots in the sewer are one of the most common reasons for a blocked toilet or a gully trap overflowing. St Heliers is an established seaside suburb at the eastern end of Tāmaki Drive, with a village of cafés and shops facing the beach and residential streets climbing the hills behind. Many homes have been renovated or rebuilt, but a good number still sit on drains and pipework laid decades ago. Tāmaki Drive links it to Mission Bay and the city.
