Almost everything in Takanini's newer streets has been built in the last fifteen years, so the plumbing calls are about modern systems rather than old pipes. Terraces and townhouses here usually have PEX water pipe, braided flexi hoses to every tap and toilet, and a mains-pressure cylinder with a valve pack. The most common urgent calls are a flexi hose that has split under a vanity or kitchen sink, a PEX fitting that has started leaking inside a wall, and a relief valve stuck open so hot water runs out of the overflow. In attached homes, water from one unit can quickly reach the next, so turning off at the toby straight away really matters. Terrace blocks also often share drain lines, so a blockage caused in one unit can back up into another. Much of Takanini is low and flat, and in heavy rain some streets and sections drain slowly, putting pressure on gully traps and stormwater pipes. Takanini has changed from rural land to one of Auckland's big new-housing areas in little more than a decade. It is now dominated by terraces, townhouses and new detached homes, with Bruce Pulman Park as a major sports venue and light industry along Great South Road. Many of the new homes are attached, sharing walls and drains with their neighbours. The Southern Motorway runs along its eastern edge.
