The Te Atatū Peninsula was one of the big post-war state housing developments, and walking its streets you can still pick the original weatherboard houses on their piles. Many of them have never had the pipework under the floor replaced, so galvanised water lines rusting from the inside and earthenware drains with open joints are regular finds. The peninsula is also a textbook example of infill: a house at the front, two or three townhouses behind, and a drain that was laid for one family now carrying the load for four. When that line blocks, the lowest gully trap on the section overflows first, and it is not always in the house that caused the problem. Te Atatū is a long, flat peninsula between Henderson Creek and the Whau River, reaching out into the upper Waitematā Harbour, with Te Atatū South on the other side of the Northwestern Motorway. Much of it was developed as a planned state housing area after the war, and it has kept a strong community feel while new townhouses fill the old quarter-acre sections. The harbour edge is lined with reserves and walkways.
